Our approach involves first developing a contextual understanding of your life experiences, your values/dreams, and barriers you have encountered to feeling self-fulfillment. As such, the initial meeting will involve the provider inquiring about your current needs and goals as well as your life experience and history.
During the first meeting, your provider may spend time initially listening to your story and what is bringing you in now. After this, the provider will walk you through an assessment of symptoms and life history. In this initial meeting, we are trying to understand you both personally and diagnostically. Learn more about diagnostic assessment in the next FAQ section.
Meeting with a stranger and sharing your experience of struggle can be very stressful. We aim to approach client meetings with a compassionate heart and the experience to help guide you in the process of personal growth.

Psychologists and other mental health providers are trained in the assessment and diagnosis of Mental Health Disorders. The current diagnostic manual is called DSM-5.
Pathwise Psychology providers seek to understand clients in a manner not limited to MH diagnoses. We will approach your current challenges and life history with a desire to understand you wholly. We do not view you solely through the lens of a MH Diagnosis.
We use our diagnostic understanding of your symptoms to be able to provide direction in regards to the latest research on therapies that may be useful. If you are diagnosed with a Mental Health Disorder, your provider will inform you of the diagnosis and provide you will psychoeducation on the symptoms and options for therapy.
Insurance providers require that we make a mental health diagnosis, link this diagnosis to the services we are providing, and list the diagnosis on insurance claim forms.
